Aus dem Abstract: "This study reveals science fiction fan culture as it was observed during a science fiction convention in southern California in 2009. Conventions, although social gatherings, are also places where learning takes place, and the culture is shared. The researcher, a fan herself, collected demographic data through an anonymous survey, then interviewed several fans to develop information about their educational history, cultural attitudes, and interactions with text. The evidence presented shows this group identifies itself as a subculture with its own language, arts, values, and traditions. Fandom also exhibits many characteristics of an affinity group as described by Gee (2003), in that its members are united by a common cause, and hold similar attitudes toward knowledge acquisition and information sharing".

Ich hab mich ein bisschen auf eBay umgetan und einige Star Trek-Fanzines bestellt. Heute hab ich vier Ausgaben von "Trekworld", der deutschsprachigen Zeitschrift von Star Trek Central Europe, und die dritte Ausgabe des amerikanischen Fanzines "Star-Crossed" geliefert bekommen. Leider sind anscheinend viel mehr englischsprachige als deutschsprachige Fanzines am Markt...

In seinem Artikel "Using Social Norms to Regulate Fan Fiction and Remix Culture" (University of Pennsylvania Law Review 157/2008, S. 1869-1935, pdf) macht sich Steven A. Hetcher Gedanken über den rechtlichen Hintergrund von Fan Fiction und "Remix": "Remix is legally interesting. Infringement is a central issue because much remix contains varying amounts of unauthorized copyright-protected material. There is a strong argument, however, that much of this remix is fair use and hence legal" (S. 1872). Unter Remix versteht Fletcher die Wiederverwendung und Bearbeitung von vorhandenem Material ohne Fan-Aspekt, zum Beispiel eine Parodie oder eine andere Form der besonders kritischen Auseinandersetzung.

Ian Willoughby schreibt in seinem Artikel "BigMag looks at post-1989 alt mags and 'zines" über eine Ausstellung alternativer Zeitschriften im DOX Centre for Contemporary Art in Prag: "Most of the five dozen magazines and close to 100 fanzines currently displayed at Dox are wall-mounted in clear plastic jackets, alongside blown-up front covers. Meanwhile, piles of some of the mags that enjoyed bigger print runs are also available to leaf through".

Die BigMag-Datenbank, die noch mehr dieser Publikationen verzeichnet, findet sich auf www.bigmag.cz. Zum Hintergrund des Projekts heißt es dort: "BigMag is a showcase of magazines which are otherwise not easy to find as they have never been displayed at eye level on the newsstands. Chance is they didn't make it to the newsstands at all. Some of them were published just once; others were for years just few Xeroxed copies held together with a glue stick. Some of them became a breeding ground for maverick journalists and some of them are now to be seen in design handbooks. Most of them have never gained any official recognition. The demand for stop-action Star Wars

Ich lese gerade das sehr interessante und gut geschriebene Buch "Free. The future of a radical price" von Chris Anderson, dem Chefredakteur von "Wired", der auch für sein Buch "The long tail. Why the future of business is selling less of more" bekannt wurde. Anderson schrieb ein Kapitel über "Imagining abundance. Thought experiments in 'post-scarcity' societies, from science fiction to religion", in dem er u.a. auf E.M. Forsters Erzählung "The machine stops", Neal Stephensons Roman "The diamond age", Arthur C. Clarkes "The city and the stars" und den Film "Metropolis" von Fritz Lang eingeht.

Noch interessanter finde ich aber die Passagen über Star Wars. Anderson schreibt, dass er seine Kinder vor die Wahl stellte, einen der offiziellen Star Wars-Filme in HD und Surround Sound (inkl. Popcorn) oder Lego-Stop-Motion-Filme von Gleichaltrigen auf YouTube anzuschauen. Sie wählten ohne langes Zögern die selbstproduzierten Animationsfilme: "It turns out that my kids, and many like them, aren't really that interested in Star Wars as created by George Lucas. They're more interested in Star Wars as created by their peers, never mind the shaky cameras and the fingers in the frame. (...) The demand for stop-action Star Wars must have always been there, but just invisible because no marketer thought to offer it. But once we had YouTube, and didn't need a marketer's permission to do things, an invisible market suddenly emerged" (S. 194).

Im Kapitel "Nonmonetary economies. Where money doesn't rule, what does?" beschäftigt sich Anderson mit der Motivation von Menschen, z.B. Wikipedia-Artikel (und ich ergänze: Fan Fiction) zu schreiben: "In short, doing things we like without pay makes us happier than the work we do for a salary. (...) The opportunity to contribute in a way that is both creative and appreciated is exactly the sort of fulfillment that Maslow privileged above all other aspirations, and what many jobs so seldom provide. No wonder the Web exploded, driven by volunteer labor - it made people happy to be creative, to contribute, to have an impact, and to be recognized as an expert in something" (S. 189).

CB Droege schreibt im Artikel "Oh Captain: James T. Kirk" auf TG Daily, dass in Fan Fiction mit der Figur von Kirk viel Interessanteres angestellt werde als in den offiziellen Episoden und Filmen:

"In the late 70s, there was a lot of Star Trek fan fiction flying around in the fanzines and small presses. This group of writers was poised at just the right moment in history - after the beat generation's free love movement, but before the homophobic AIDS scare - to generate the phenomenon of what we now call Slash Fiction, a genre of fan fiction which places two, usually heterosexual, characters from a popular fantasy property into a homosexual relationship. (...) These, mostly female, fan fiction writers, saw a homoerotic element in the relationship between these characters, a certain dynamic which they felt could only be explained by sexual tension".

Diplomandinnenseminar

Gestern war ich das erste Mal beim DiplomandInnenseminar - gemeinsam mit 35 anderen Studierenden. Da wimmelte es nur so vor intertextuellen Lektüren, Landschaftskonzeptionen, Männlichkeitskonstruktionen, romantischer Sprachphilosophie, urbanen Räumen und postmoderner Literatur ;-) Ich habe mich für den 24. Mai für ein Referat gemeldet - das zwingt mich, in den nächsten Monaten mich wieder in das Thema einzuarbeiten.
Eine Kollegin schreibt über das Kaspar Hauser-Motiv unter dem Gesichtspunkt der Wiedereingliederung der isolierten Personen in die Gesellschaft. Das erinnert mich doch gleich ein bisschen an die Star Trek-Folge Relics, wo Scotty nach 75 Jahren im Transporter-Puffer gewisse Schwierigkeiten hat, sich auf der neuen Enterprise zurechtzufinden.

"This book re-evaluates the way we examine today's digital media environment. By looking at how popular culture uses different digital technologies, Digital Fandom bolsters contemporary media theory by introducing new methods of analysis. Henry Jenkins hat im August 2010 ein Interview mit Paul Booth geführt, das im Weblog "Confessions of an Aca-Fan" (Teil 1 ; Teil 2) nachzulesen ist. Booth spricht darin auch über die Limitierungen bei der Fan-Forschung:

"It seems that empirical data about fans can really only come from one of two sources. We can either ethnographically study fan communities, by joining fan groups, participating in fan discussions, or otherwise involving ourselves with fans; or, we can analyze fan-created texts that populate fan culture. (...) It is relatively easy to study either communities or texts, but it is relatively difficult to do both at once".

Hans Joachim Alpers verstarb am Mittwoch im Alter von 67 Jahren nach kurzer, schwerer Krankheit. "Alpers zählte zu den Schwergewichten in der deutschen Phantastik-Szene. Die Liste seiner Aktivitäten ist sehr lang, er war langjähriger Herausgeber der 'Science Fiction Times', ab 1978 war er verantwortlicher Herausgeber der Reihe 'Knaur Science Fiction', ab 1980 betreute er die Reihe 'Moewig Science Fiction'. Zusammen mit Werner Fuchs und Ulrich Kiesow entwickelte er das Fantasy-Rollenspiel 'Das schwarze Auge' und gründete den ersten auf Rollenspiele spezialisierten Verlag, Fantasy Productions", schreiben die Phantastik-News am Donnerstag.

In Ausgabe 25 (2011) 1 der Zeitschrift Textual Practice ist der Artikel "Whither Fanon?" von David Marriota erschienen - leider ohne Abstract, daher kann ich noch nicht sagen, worum es geht.

Update: Gerade hab ich den Artikel runtergeladen - über VPN funktioniert ja der Zugriff auf die Datenbanken der UB Wien auch von extern. Nur hat der Artikel gar nix mit Fanon in meinem Sinne zu tun, sondern mit dem mir bis dato unbekannten französischen Psychiater und Philosophen Frantz Fanon. Wenn ich jetzt die 34 Dollar für den Artikel gezahlt hätte, die Routledge verlangt, würde ich jetzt Rumpelstilzchen imitieren. Für den Preis sollte man schon einen Abstract oder Keywords erwarten dürfen.

Die altbekannte Tatsache, dass Star Trek in den vielen Folgen und Filmen nie eine homosexuelle Figur hatte (die Folge, wo Jadzia ihre Frau aus einem früheren Leben küsst, kann man da ja nicht wirklich dazuzählen, und Beverly schafft den Sprung auch nicht) wird in zwei jüngst erschienenen Artikeln behandelt: Michael Jensen: "Brannon Braga on 'Star Trek's Lack of Gay Characters: 'Not a Forward Thinking Decision'". Funk verweist auf Slash: "It's also worth noting that where Brannon Braga believes the series missed its mark, fandom (and the internet) picked up the slack. Zu Gast bei Vulcan Spirit

Vorgeschichte: Seit einigen Monaten lese ich das Weblog von Nina Horvath, einer Paläontologiestudentin und SF-Schriftstellerin. Und dann lernten wir uns bei einem Treffen der Science Fiction-Gruppe Wien persönlich kennen. Wir kamen ins Gespräch über meine Diplomarbeit, und Nina erzählte mir von einer Star Trek-Fangruppe namens "Vulkan Spirit". Am Samstag war ich das erste Mal dort. Die Treffen finden in einem Hobbyraum statt, der mit zahlreichen, wenn nicht gar unzähligen Autogrammkarten, Photos, Raumschiffmodellen, einem Bat'leth ausgestattet ist und als Raumbasis dient. Eine sehr nette Runde. Ich wurde berufsbedingt zur Archivoffizierin ernannt und muss mir noch meine Rasse überlegen. Der Counselor ist ein Klingone, deswegen dauern die Therapiegespräche immer nur sehr kurz ;-) Besonders interessant für meine Arbeit fand ich, dass auch Fanfilme gedreht wurden und dass die Dreharbeiten bei nächster Gelegenheit wieder aufgenommen werden sollen. Ich hoffe, dass alle mit mir noch unbeschwert sprechen, wenn sie wissen, dass ich eine Diplomarbeit in diesem Bereich schreibe. Sie müssen wohl einfach darauf vertrauen, dass ich nichts verwende, was nicht abgesprochen ist.

Beim Titel des Artikels "How to get into 20 classic science fiction shows: The ultimate guide" von Alasdair Wilkins (Hinweis aus M-StarTrek) dachte ich zunächst ja, es ginge um einen Schauspieler, der in zwanzig verschiedenen Science Fiction-Serien mitgespielt hat ;-) es geht aber darum, in Serien mit vielen Staffeln einen gelungenen Einstieg zu finden. Die Tipps bei Serien, die ich selber gesehen habe, sind durchaus nachzuvollziehen - z.B. bei TNG erst mit Staffel 3 zu beginnen ;-) Ich hab ja einen großen Nachholbedarf, was Dr. Who betrifft, und werde daher gerne auf die Ratschläge zurückgreifen.

As a NASA wind tunnel engineer, hired after graduation from Georgia Tech in 1959, Brooks answered a small ad in a science-fiction magazine: 'Discover fandom for $2!' A stack of fanzines arrived. The authors weren't content with merely penning a note to a sci-fi magazine and hoping for publication. They wanted interactivity before that term became a buzzword and the guarantee that their comment would post. They stuffed fanzines with letters, poems, stories and critiques, as well as personal updates and random observations. 'Fandom is something that comes in the mail' was their slogan".

While the focus of the collection is fanzines, it also contains thousands of publications from anarchist, left anti-authoritarian and grassroots community groups. It is one of the very few places in the US (alongside KSL and the Labadie collection) where anarchist print publications from 1970 to the present are actively collected and made accessible to the public. All of the librarians are volunteers, and everything in the library has been donated - the library has no budget. But it desperately needs to purchase preservation materials to help protect the collection; specifically acid-free boxes and plastic sleeves for the periodicals. Abstract: "The presentation of film texts as short stories in early motion picture fan magazines has long been treated as a sort of antiquarian curio, and has usually been discussed as simple synopsis of the films in question. In fact, close examination of these 'fictionalizations' and comparison across magazines and between fictionalized and film text suggests that these stories do not simply re-present or expand on the films - they transform them into an aesthetic distinct from that of the transitional film era and more in line with classical Hollywood norms. In doing so, they suggest that films were not treated by readers as 'master texts' from which other forms merely derived, but as contingent incarnations of a story world presumed to be behind the films. Wäre wohl an der Zeit, das manische Sammeln von Sekundärliteratur - das mir als Bibliothekarin halt auch im Blut liegt - zu reduzieren und endlich mit dem Schreiben des theoretischen Teils zu beginnen, für den ich schon weit mehr Material habe als notwendig. Einreichfrist war leider schon im Mai, aber hier ein paar Informationen über das, was uns erwartet (hoffentlich bin ich zum Zeitpunkt des Erscheinens schon mit meiner Diplomarbeit fertig...):

"Scholars of literature and popular culture, along with ethnographers and sociologists, have produced a rich and sophisticated body of literature about fan communities and creativity over the last twenty years, but most of this work has focused on groups of fans who have been active since the 1960s, and very little of it has been produced by historians. This special issue will focus on the rich history of fans and their engagement with a variety of objects of fandom. We seek to expand the range of topics and methodologies available to studies of fans and their communities, and we hope to understand fans better by studying them in their historical contexts.
We invite contributions that focus on fan works and/or fan communities from any place and time since the late eighteenth century. This periodization is informed by Walter Benjamin's idea that—thanks to the invention of lithography—the original artwork, with its unique aura, came into being at that point precisely because of the availability of cheap copies. He argued that the distinctions between original and mass-produced commercial art and media created the boundary between high and popular art, and between mass and bourgeois tastes. We wonder whether the historical study of fans and fan works might modify Benjamin's formulation of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as the Age of Mechanical Reproduction. Does the long-standing existence of fan fiction, fan art, and other forms of community-generated fan works clarify or muddy his argument?
The special issue will be divided between scholarly contributions of 4,000 to 7,000 words, and oral histories of older fans. We will seek to include scholarly articles and oral histories that can be read against or with each other. For example, an interview of a present-day cosplayer might be juxtaposed with an article on nineteenth-century amateur drama".

Ich habe mir heute das Buch "Investigating Audiences" von Andy Ruddock auf der UB Wien gewunschen: "The book is divided into chapters that deal with audience research in terms of concepts and topics. Regarding concepts, Investigating Audiences is firmly grounded within interpretive approaches to studying viewers, readers and listeners. Further to this, the book looks at the different ways in which media influence can be accessed and the attendant methodological consequences". Bin gespannt, ob es bestellt wird - bisher war die UB aber sehr entgegenkommend, was meine Ankaufsvorschläge betrifft.

Die Bibliothek der Universität von Iowa verwahrt bereits eine Sammlung von 250.000 Zines: SF/F-Zines, APA zines, aber auch Riot Grrrl und Underground Music Zines. Nun sollen gemeinsam mit der Organization for Transformative Works auch andere Ausdrucksformen der Fankultur gesammelt werden: "Do you have zines, fannish flyers, paper memorabilia, or con programs that you can't keep anymore, but can't bear to throw out? The OTW can help! The Fan Culture Preservation Project is a partnership between the OTW and the Special Collections department at the University of Iowa Libraries, and is dedicated to preserving fan artifacts such as letterzines, fanzines, and other non-digital fan works and memorabilia".

Critical Discourse and Contested Identities", herausgegeben von Carmen Rosa Caldas-Coulthard und Rick Iedema, gewunschen, denn da ist der Aufsatz "Multilingual Fan Fiction: Writing (Trans) Local Identities and Communities" von Sirpa Leppänen erschienen.
Auf der Website des Centre of Excellence for the Study of Variation, Contacts and Change in English ist eine Beschreibung des vermutlich zugrundeliegenden Forschungsprojektes nachzulesen: "In this project, fan fiction is approached as situated at the intersection of the domains of fans' everyday lives, popular media, and the Web. Fan fiction has a key role in the on-going linguistic and cultural change in Finland, traditionally an EFL country with a fairly homogenous cultural identity. It is one influential site through which English spreads and establishes itself as a resource for Finns, in their everyday lives as well as in the negotiation of (trans)local identities and communities. Ich lese gerade das Buch "Alternative Literature. A practical guide to librarians" von Chris Atton, erschienen 1996 bei Gower (zu einem eher prohibitiven Preis von 65 £ immer noch lieferbar).
Ist natürlich schon etwas älter und enthält kaum etwas Spezifisches über Science Fiction, ist aber nützlich für die Frage, wie Fanzines in Bibliotheken gehandhabt werden. Zitat: "Working with alternative publications is not easy: it requires diligence, personal investigation, networking and some good fortune. It may require positive discrimination and special pleading at the outset. Our own attitudes to what needs to be in our libraries may have to be changed, widened immeasurably" (S. 171).

Auf Ö1 lief gestern die Sendung "Lesen im Internet-Zeitalter" von Maria Mayer, bei der auch Fan Fiction thematisiert wird: "Das Internet hat neben der reinen Digitalisierungsfunktion auch eine kreative Seite für Leser. Es hat zum Beispiel zur Entstehung der sogenannten 'fanfiction' geführt. Das sind Geschichten, die Fans zu einem Medienprodukt schreiben, zum Beispiel zu Harry Potter - quasi ein 'Werther-Effekt' unserer Zeit. Fans geben ihrer Begeisterung dadurch Ausdruck, dass sie selber Geschichten als Fortsetzungen, Zufügungen oder Neuinterpretationen verfassen und sie online publizieren. Im Online-Netzwerk Xing gibt es auch eine Star Trek-Gruppe. Themen sind "Alles über sämtliche Star Trek-Serien und -Spielfilme, die zugrundeliegende Philosophie und Wissenschaft, Termine (TV-Sendungen, Conventions usw.), verfügbare DVD-Angebote und mehr". Ich bin gleich beigetreten und habe mal eine Rundfrage nach Fan Fiction-AutorInnen gestartet. Eine Mitposterin meinte, ich solle auch Online-Rollenspiele aufnehmen. Nach einigem Nachdenken muss ich sagen, dass man diese Form von Fanaktivität durchaus auch als Texte - wenn auch kollaborativ erzeugt - bezeichnen könnte.
