Konferenz "Fanfiction im Archiv", Marbach

Fanfiction transformiert, aktualisiert aber auch. Sie macht bekannte Quellen auf neue Art lebendig, sozial und sogar interaktiv. Doch welche Rolle spielt Fanfiction im deutschsprachigen Sprachraum und welche Themen und Motive werden in der Fanfiction rezipiert und verarbeitet? Zu welchen Quellen schreiben deutschsprachige Fan-Gemeinden ihre Geschichten, was wird gelesen? Welche Autor/-innen und Geschichten des deutschsprachigen Kanons finden sich in Fanfictions wieder? Was macht diese Interaktion mit der Literatur und mit denen, die sie bearbeiten? Wo spielt Fanfiction nicht nur in der Populärkultur, sondern auch in der Wissenschaft, in Unterricht und Lehre eine Rolle? Wie wird sie beforscht? Das DLA hat im Oktober 2024 begonnen, Fanfiction zu sammeln und möchte gemeinsam mit Wissenschaftler/-innen und Expert/-innen dem Thema unter vielfältigen Gesichtspunkten nachgehen.

In diesem Kontext entstehen eine Crowdsourcing-Plattform für Praxisprojekte, ein Workshop zum Thema und ein archivarischer Zugang zum Material. Das Konzept Fanfiction wird dabei in seiner Komplexität erfasst: als soziale, kollaborative, subversive Praxis im stetigen Fluss.

Am 20. und 21. März findet die Tagung "Lest ihr noch oder schreibt ihr schon? Fanfiction im Archiv" online statt.

Call for Papers: Special Issue of the Journal of Fandom Studies on Archives and Special Collections

Abstract submissions are invited for a special issue of the Journal of Fandom Studies. This issue will focus on archives and special collections relevant to scholars of fan studies. Topics addressed might include profiles of institutional collections with primers for use, research, archiving and curatorial practices performed by fans, and archival and archontic theory.

Other possible topics include:

• Historical perspectives on collecting fan material in libraries and archives
• Race, gender, and queerness in fan collections and in library subject indexing
• Logistical and ethical issues of access to fan materials
• Current research and collecting gaps in the documentary record

Contributors may also submit short profiles (500 words) of relevant institutional collections with curatorial contact information as part of a special Research Guide section of this issue.

All articles submitted should be original work and must not be under consideration by other publications.

Please send abstracts of 250 words (including a title and keywords) with biographical statements of 100 words to Cait Coker (cait@illinois.edu) and Jeremy Brett (jwbrett@library.tamu.edu) by February 28, 2020. If accepted, contributions should be no longer than 9000 words, including notes and references, with completed drafts expected in October 2020.

Citizen archivists

Sehr interessanter artikel von Jesse Jarnow, der auch Bezug zum (Musik-)Fandom hat: "Why Collecting Matters: Citizen Archivists and the Battle for Future Pasts" (Wondering Sound, 2. Jänner 2015): "While physical media is slowly becoming a thing of the past, there still remains plenty to collect. There's a vast musical world that falls beyond Spotify’s officially licensed purview, and even outside the realm of established retailers like Amazon and iTunes".

Die neue Ausgabe der "Büchereiperspektiven", einer österreichischen Zeitschrift für öffentliche Bibliotheken, widmet sich dem Thema "Die imaginierte Bibliothek. Bücherwelten in Literatur und Film". The Online Archive of California offers a finding aid to the Gene Roddenberry Star Trek Television Series Collection, 1966-1969 which is archived at UCLA Library, Performing Arts Special Collections: "Collection consists of material related to the television program, Star trek. Includes story outlines, treatments and various drafts of scripts, shooting schedules, cast lists, title sheets, photographic lists, budget reports, and memoranda".

Expressing what I thought was wrong

In ihrer Masterarbeit "Cataloging the Whedonverse: Potential Roles for Librarians in Online Fan Fiction" zitiert die Autorin Jessica Freya Kem auf S. 20 eine Interviewpartnerin:

"I was delighted to find fanfic. It was such a wonderful way of expressing what I thought was wrong with the original TV show, and putting it right".

Das bringt es so auf den Punkt, dass ich überlege, es als Motto für meine Diplomarbeit zu verwenden...

Harriet Potter

"Thanks to fan fiction, we get Harriet Potter and erotic 'Twilight'", schreibt Edward M. Eveld im Kansas City Star. Eine der befragten Personen ist übrigens Bibliothekarin: "Liz Lockett of Kansas City admits to some racy prose in her fan fiction career, which goes back more than a dozen years. At least, said the assistant librarian, she's never indulged in 'Mpreg,' in which a male character becomes ... pregnant". - Generell ein informierter Artikel, der verschiedene Aspekte beleuchtet und zeigt, dass sich der Journalist mit dem Thema auseinandergesetzt hat.

Archives and fannish history

"A printed zine from the 1970s may last longer than a story published online in the last six months. In fact, continual changes in publication preference and fannish infrastructure have impacted the accessibility and permanence of fan fiction: zines may have a much lower initial circulation, but hard copies have a permanence that newsgroup posts, mailing-list e-mails, or blog posts may lack".

Zines in Bibliotheken - warum?

Auf die Frage "Why do you have zines in the library?" antwortet die Timberland Regional Library:

"Zines are the purest form of counterculture expression that exists in printed form, and insightful indicators of current times. They represent the under-represented and give voice to marginalized members of society. Zines are interesting and cheap, and as a public library, it is our job to provide access to all types of information".

Neue Website für Barnard Zine Library

Die Barnard Zine Library in New York hat eine neue, RSS-taugliche Website und wird daher ihr Weblog auf LiveJournal einstellen. Auch auf Facebook, Flickr und Twitter ist die Bibliothek vertreten.

ABC No Rio Zine Library braucht Geld

"The ABC No Rio Zine Library is one of the best keep secrets around. Located in ABC No Rio, New York City's Lower East Side radical community center, the library houses over 12,000 items. While the focus of the collection is fanzines, it also contains thousands of publications from anarchist, left anti-authoritarian and grassroots community groups. It is one of the very few places in the US (alongside KSL and the Labadie collection) where anarchist print publications from 1970 to the present are actively collected and made accessible to the public. All of the librarians are volunteers, and everything in the library has been donated - the library has no budget. But it desperately needs to purchase preservation materials to help protect the collection; specifically acid-free boxes and plastic sleeves for the periodicals. So we're holding a party to help raise money".

Technovelgy

Eine Seite, auf der Science Fiction-Fans Stunden zubringen können, ist Technovelgy von Bill Christensen: "Explore the inventions and ideas of science fiction writers". Für mich als Bibliothekarin ist die Kategorie "Data storage" besonders interessant, aber auch Einträge wie "micro book", "electronic paper" und "robot librarian". - Die Seite verzeichnet nicht einfach nur Technologien, die von SF-AutorInnen ersonnen wurden, sondern ergänzt diese Vorstellungen durch Links zu Medienberichten über tatsächliche Erfindungen und Entwicklungen (ein simples Beispiel wäre Kommunikator > Handy).
Suchen und Browsen sind nach Kategorie (von Armor bis Work), Timeline (beginnend mit Schwerelosigkeit - Kepler 1634), AutorIn (von Adams bis Zelazny) und Buch möglich.

Lesen auf der Enterprise: Nachlese

Die Wiederholung unserer Film-/Text-Zusammenstellung "Lesen auf der Enterprise. Bibliotheken und BibliothekarInnen in Science Fiction und Fantasy" wurde auf Ö1 und in der Rathauskorrespondenz angekündigt. Wir hatten rund vierzig BesucherInnen, und wir sind eingeladen worden, noch einmal aufzutreten :-)

Iowa: Fan Culture Preservation Project

Die Bibliothek der Universität von Iowa verwahrt bereits eine Sammlung von 250.000 Zines: SF/F-Zines, APA zines, aber auch Riot Grrrl und Underground Music Zines. Nun sollen gemeinsam mit der Organization for Transformative Works auch andere Ausdrucksformen der Fankultur gesammelt werden: "Do you have zines, fannish flyers, paper memorabilia, or con programs that you can't keep anymore, but can't bear to throw out? The OTW can help! The Fan Culture Preservation Project is a partnership between the OTW and the Special Collections department at the University of Iowa Libraries, and is dedicated to preserving fan artifacts such as letterzines, fanzines, and other non-digital fan works and memorabilia".

Bibliotheken in der Science Fiction und Fantasy", das wir im März für den Aktionsmonat "La bibliotheca total" des Aktionsradius Augarten zusammengestellt hatten. Von der mächtigen Oberbibliothekarin Zarvora bis zum Roboter-Bibliothekar, von den Jedi-Archiven bis zur USS Enterprise Library, vom Kabinett von Saraogh auf Zentapher bis zur zerebralen Bibliothek - ein audiovisueller Ausflug zu utopischen Bibliotheken und phantastischen BibliothekarInnen. - Ort und Zeit: 16. Practical guide to alternative literature

Ich lese gerade das Buch "Alternative Literature. A practical guide to librarians" von Chris Atton, erschienen 1996 bei Gower (zu einem eher prohibitiven Preis von 65 £ immer noch lieferbar).
Ist natürlich schon etwas älter und enthält kaum etwas Spezifisches über Science Fiction, ist aber nützlich für die Frage, wie Fanzines in Bibliotheken gehandhabt werden. Zitat: "Working with alternative publications is not easy: it requires diligence, personal investigation, networking and some good fortune. It may require positive discrimination and special pleading at the outset. Our own attitudes to what needs to be in our libraries may have to be changed, widened immeasurably" (S. 171).

National Library of Scotland sammelt Fanzines

"While most libraries, whether public or private, house a periodical section, few are likely to carry the handwritten Xeroxed pamphlets known as 'fanzines'. This vein of underground journalism has been a small but significant part of popular culture for decades, but is increasingly in danger of going extinct in the information age". So beginnt Christine Smith ihren Artikel Scotland Does Its Part to Save Planet's Fanzines vom 4. März 2009 über eine Fanzine-Sammel-Initiative der National Library of Scotland. - Siehe dazu auch den Bericht in der BBC.
